Normal variants: Cavernous internal carotid origin of the ophthalmic artery

Case #1

The ophthalmic artery normally is the first branch of the internal carotid as it emerges from the cavernous sinus. The most common anomalous origin is from the middle meningeal artery, but it can also originate from the cavernous internal carotid. This is in the location of the often seen inferolateral trunk, which is a remnant of the embryonic dorsal ophthalmic artery.

Case #1a

Lateral right internal carotid angiogram

Anomalous origin of the ophthalmic artery from the cavernous internal carotid is present.

Case #1b

AP right internal carotid angiogram

The anomalous origin of the ophthalmic artery is again demonstrated.
