EXTRACRANIAL CIRCULATION: Ascending and deep cervical arteries

Case #1

This patient has an occluded right common carotid artery, occluded bilateral vertebral arteries (right at origin, left in cervical portion) and an 80% stenosis of the left internal carotid.

Case #1a

Lateral aortic arch injection

The ascending and deep cervical arteries on the right reconstitute the occluded right vertebral artery. Occlusion of the right common carotid and marked stenosis of the left internal carotid are also demonstrated.

Case #1b

RPO neck, aortic arch injection

This projection better demonstrates the left internal carotid stenosis and the enlarged deep cervical artery which reconstitutes the vertebral artery.

Case #1c

AP cranial view, aortic arch injection

Blood supply to the brain is primarily from the critically stenotic left internal carotid and collateral circulation.
