Anterior deep temporal artery connecting the internal maxillary artery with the internal carotid artery

Case #1

Case #1a

Lateral common carotid angiogram

The internal carotid is occluded. There is reconstitution of the cavernous internal carotid via the ophthalmic artery.  The ophthalmic artery receives blood flow from the internal maxillary artery  via the orbital branch of the anterior deep temporal artery. There is a characteristic curve in the anterior deep temporal artery marked by the tip of the arrow. This artery runs along a groove in the greater wing of the sphenoid.

Case #1b

AP external carotid angiogram

The internal carotid is reconstituted via retrograde ophthalmic artery flow supplied by the anterior deep temporal artery.
